I've noticed something and I'm curious if you have too... Is it just me or is everyone wearing a tracking device these days? Yes, wearables have a definite upside. They can help you stay accountable, increase gains, and record way more data than we can manually. BUT have we switched out the reward of happy hormones and flow for better metrics?

Today I sat down with Phil White, to talk about his new book Unplugged: Evolve From Technology to Upgrade Your Fitness, Performance & Consciousness and how we can come back to training our instincts instead of solely relying on our devices.

Phil White is an Emmy-nominated writer and the co-author of Unplugged with Brian Mackenzie and Dr. Andy Galpin, Game Changer with Dr. Fergus Connolly and Jim Harbaugh and Flight Plan with Dr. Kelly Starrett. He's also a frequenter contributor to The Inertia and SUP Magazine.

There is a lot in here. Before I made the connection between feeling overwhelmed and an excess in obsession over metrics, I didn't really know consciously that I had traded out some of the natural benefits of fitness and progress for better looking stats. At the very least, I hope this show inspires you to view your fitness tracking and health stats as more of a tool instead of a metric of success.

In this episode you'll learn

  • If all the tracking and quantifying we do is truly increasing our insight and outcomes.
  • The importance of unplugging and being fully present in an outdoor environment.
  • How to develop more intrinsic motivation, instead of relying on cue’s from our devices.
  • Ways to decide if technology is going to add to, or take away from an experience.
  • How we can better get in touch with our own internal feedback.
  • The unethical marketing that may arise from large companies tracking our data.
  • How spending more time in nature can help us get into a state of flow.
  • and so much MORE…
