I absolutely love and find it very refreshing when I come across a body of work that has a healthy dose of self inquiry, utility, AND edge.

In his new book Unfu*k Yourself: Get out of your head and into your life, Gary John Bishop dives into 7 assertions to help you shift the narrative you tell yourself.

Gary began his life journey in Glasgow, Scotland. The grit and wit of his early life have contributed to his tough-love, in-your-face approach to personal development. Coupled with world-class training, Gary has created a potent brew of effectiveness and the ability to reach through the crust of people's lives and root out the deeper issues that consume them and tie them to their challenges. His ability to elevate and expand people's greatness makes the kind of life-altering impact that is rare in the industry. Gary's hyper-awareness and years of elite training allow him to assess each client and guide them to the path that best expresses their lives; with micro precision, he cuts straight to the heart of what is going to make a difference.

This book was a great read for so many reasons. Right at the top of the list is how raw and real it is... no fluff. In a sea of quick hits and short quotes that lack depth, these assertions and the questions they lead to will give you a very useful set of tools to begin unpacking why you do what you do and what to do from here.

Today we are going to unpack Unfu*k Yourself and get deeper into how Gary used some of these in his own life to overcome obstacles.

In this episode you'll learn

  • How to step up in life and begin to take action
  • Why we should challenge our self imposed limitations
  • Learning to thrive during times of uncertainty
  • How we can stop undermining our own greatness
  • The need to face reality and take a stand for who we want to become
  • Why future expectations get in the way of our current happiness
  • Using assertive language to redirect our inner dialogue

When it comes to seeing life as an interconnected network governed by our ability to allow abundance to flow into our experience, my guest today has his story to tell.

Growing up having very little, wearing out of date clothes that were often too small, and even being the one with the tape between his eyeglasses that you only thought happened in movies were just a few things Christian Mickelsen overcame on his journey to a life of plenty... abundance.

Christian Mickelsen is one of the most influential coaches, healers, and business leaders in the world. His company has made the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies in America 3 years in row. My guest today helps men to overcome something he calls the "nice guy syndrome." I was pretty shocked after digging into this work how many characteristics I've seen in my own relationships.

Dr. Robert Glover is the author of the bestselling book, No More Mr. Nice Guy: A Proven Plan for Getting What You Want In Love, Sex and Life. His website www.drglover.com features numerous online self-help courses, workshops, groups, and trained coaches and therapists. Dr. Glover lives in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Kute Blackson is a next generation world leader out to awaken millions to Love and to Live their inspired destiny.

Kute quickly learned that the “outside-in” approach favored by so many in the personal development space had to become an inside-out approach. So he decided to create his own method—a process that liberates the individual and the true self at the core and then pushes those gifts outward into the universe. This helps the individual get in touch with who they really are. It is a process of breaking free—so that the individual can live, give, and share the truest expression of their self. This is what Kute calls “Liberated Living.”

Kute is back on the show to celebrate the release of the paperback copy of You Are The One: A Bold Adventure in Finding Purpose, Discovering the Real You which shows readers how to unlock their true potential and live a life they love, through love.

We all have a particular journey in life, lessons to learn, and a path that leads us to those lessons. Before I came across personal development, and the art and science of maintaining your mindset, food was my medicine. It still is the foundation of my lifestyle, and being nimble in thought, feeling, and action is the #1 skill I continue to zero in on and develop in my every day life, and especially when life presents it's unique challenges.

My guest today has a long track record of success in the fitness and nutrition space. Her most recent book, Miracle Mindset: A Mother, Her Son, and Life's Hardest Lessons tells the story of her son's near fatal accident that called upon all her mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual resources to continue moving forward and keeping faith through a very challenging time.

Celebrity nutrition and fitness expert JJ Virgin teaches clients how to eliminate food and carb intolerances so they can transform their health and their lives. As co-host of TLC’s Freaky Eaters and health expert on Dr. Phil, JJ is a prominent TV and media personality, including appearances on PBS, Dr. Oz, Rachael Ray, Access Hollywood, and the TODAY Show. JJ is the author of four NY Times bestsellers: The Virgin Diet, The Virgin Diet Cookbook, JJ Virgin’s Sugar Impact Diet, and JJ Virgin’s Sugar Impact Diet Cookbook.

JJ hosts the popular JJ Virgin Lifestyle Show podcast and regularly writes for Huffington Post, Rodale Wellness, Mind Body Green and other major blogs and magazines. In addition to her work with nutrition and fitness, JJ is also a business coach and founded the premier health entrepreneur event and community, The Mindshare Summit.

I've noticed something and I'm curious if you have too... Is it just me or is everyone wearing a tracking device these days? Yes, wearables have a definite upside. They can help you stay accountable, increase gains, and record way more data than we can manually. BUT have we switched out the reward of happy hormones and flow for better metrics?

Today I sat down with Phil White, to talk about his new book Unplugged: Evolve From Technology to Upgrade Your Fitness, Performance & Consciousness and how we can come back to training our instincts instead of solely relying on our devices.

Phil White is an Emmy-nominated writer and the co-author of Unplugged with Brian Mackenzie and Dr. Andy Galpin, Game Changer with Dr. Fergus Connolly and Jim Harbaugh and Flight Plan with Dr. Kelly Starrett. He's also a frequenter contributor to The Inertia and SUP Magazine.

There is a lot in here. Before I made the connection between feeling overwhelmed and an excess in obsession over metrics, I didn't really know consciously that I had traded out some of the natural benefits of fitness and progress for better looking stats. At the very least, I hope this show inspires you to view your fitness tracking and health stats as more of a tool instead of a metric of success.

In this episode you'll learn

  • If all the tracking and quantifying we do is truly increasing our insight and outcomes.
  • The importance of unplugging and being fully present in an outdoor environment.
  • How to develop more intrinsic motivation, instead of relying on cue’s from our devices.
  • Ways to decide if technology is going to add to, or take away from an experience.
  • How we can better get in touch with our own internal feedback.
  • The unethical marketing that may arise from large companies tracking our data.
  • How spending more time in nature can help us get into a state of flow.

My guest today, through decades of research, her lab work, and peer reviewed publications, has presented a new theory of emotion in her most recent book How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain.

Lisa Feldman Barrett, PhD, is a University Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University, with appointments at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. In addition to the book How Emotions are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain, Dr. Barrett has published over 200 peer-reviewed, scientific papers appearing in Science, Nature Neuroscience, and other top journals in psychology and cognitive neuroscience, as well as six academic volumes published by Guilford Press.

She is also an elected fellow of Canada’s most prestigious national organization of scholars, the Royal Society of Canada (analogous to the National Academy in the United States).

Today we'll dive into her book How Emotions Are Made and what these new findings could mean in relationships, personal change, and so much more.

Could there be a potential down side to positive thinking? If you've tuned into the show before, you've heard me have many conversations with leaders and authors on the benefits of positive thinking, imagination, and other methods characteristic of the self-help and positive psychology movement.

On some level I think we know that pushing away or even suppressing seemingly negative emotions is counterproductive. All the while we get mixed messages, from social media etc., that always staying positive is the way to be.

In this interview, I sat down with Oliver Burkeman to chat about all things positive psychology and his book, The Antidote...

Oliver Burkeman is a columnist for the Guardian and the author of The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking.

I see this book and Oliver's work as a bit of a holistic approach to the mind and emotions. These concepts helped me see the terrain of the human experience on an all inclusive level. Where we can be positive, have a positive outlook on life, and integrate and potentially transform some of those seemingly negative feelings and thoughts.

In this episode you'll learn

  • About the negative side effects that come from too much positive thinking.
  • Why it's important to experience our negative emotions.
  • How always having to strive and push ourselves takes us away from the present moment.
  • Why we shouldn't wait until we FEEL motivated before taking action.
  • How to move past the planning stage and take action.
  • How we can use unfavorable emotions as warning signs.
  • Why always having to “get into the right mindset”, can cause us to procrastinate.

My guest today has a deep fascination with human behavior and why we do what we do. Over the past 20 years, through his private practice and clinical work, Dr. Kevin Gilliland has distilled some important distinctions on how to develop a quiet mind and what it means to struggle well AND live well.

Dr. Kevin Gilliland, Psy.D., is an expert in mental health, depression and addiction. After working more than two decades in healthcare as a clinical psychologist, Kevin became a pioneer of outpatient treatment as the CEO and Executive Director of Innovation 360, a treatment center for alcohol & drug addiction, depression, anxiety, bipolar, family therapy and life development.

Realizing the low success rates of typical addiction programs, Kevin created Innovation360 (i360) to solve the gaps in the current system by creating a unique customized treatment for each patient. i360 specializes in finding balance of insight and change within their clients, instead of the standard “quick fix” programs, they provide one-on-one support to transition clients from the therapy office and into their homes, back into their daily life.

His debut book, Struggle Well Live Well: 60 Ways to Navigate Life’s Good, Bad, and In-Between tackles Kevin’s approach on life – which aligns with his approach and advice for friends, family and his clients! It serves as a roadmap to navigating through life’s inevitable struggles and how to over come the simplest of obstacles, such as work/life balance, to heavier issues, mental illness or addiction.

Today we are going to dive into Kevin's new book and unpack some key distinctions that make it unique.

In this episode you'll learn

  • Why an active mind isn't a bad thing, if we can learn to use it effectively, and turn it off when necessary.

I remember when I came across Bruce Lipton's first book, The Biology of Belief. Before diving into natural foods, Macrobiotics, and all the like, I was on the path to medical school. This book was A HUGE confirmation and re-working of everything I thought to be utterly and completely true about biology and the human brain.

Dr. Bruce Lipton began his scientific career as a cell biologist. His discoveries, which ran counter to the established scientific view that life is controlled by the genes, presaged one of today’s most important fields of study, the science of epigenetics.

Epigenetics is an absolutely fascinating field of science that literally means "above the gene." In a very basic sense it says that our gene's do not control expression, but the proteins, our environment, and many other factors do.

Bruce H. Lipton, PhD is an internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit. He is a bestselling author of The Biology of Belief as well as two other cutting edge books, The Honeymoon Effect and Spontaneous Evolution.

Today we talk about the changing paradigms in biology (and what that actual means on a practical level), the power of belief, and so much more.

In this episode you'll learn

  • About the old belief in biology... that our genes will have the ultimate control over our lives and what that means.
  • Why we are not victims of our DNA, and how we can have more control over our genetic expression.
  • Why changing our consciousness will have massive impact on our physical world.
  • How to uncover subconscious habits/patterns that were programmed inside us from an early age.
  • How to re-wire your subconscious, for a happier and more abundant mindset.
  • Ways to turn off incessant thought and stop perpetuating the cycles of self sabotage.
  • Newtonian and quantum physics, and how energy fields affect physical matter.
  • How to install support programs in your subconscious mind that will take you in a positive direction,
  • Discover how the unconscious realm controls our behavior.

The journey of self-discovery can often seem very focused on a single point, just us an individual. But, without looking at the bigger picture of where we got most of our beliefs and values from misses the picture. My guest today has a very intriguing and unique perspective on how longevity is culturally learned.

Dr. Martinez is a clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in how cultural beliefs affect health and longevity. He proposes, based on credible research evidence, that longevity is learned and the causes of health are inherited. He has studied healthy centenarians (100 years or older) worldwide and found that only 20 to 25% can be attributed to genetics - the rest is related to how they live and the cultural beliefs they share. In addition to longevity, he also explains why our immune system is not just a protector. Instead, it responds to the cultural premises we learn to perceive the world.

Today we'll unpack what biocognitive science is and do a deep dive into his most recent book, The MindBody Self: How Longevity is Culturally Learned and the Causes of Health are Inherited.

In this episode you'll learn…

  • What biocognitive science is
  • How our culture influences our health and longevity
  • How our identity as described in our cultural context gets woven into our mindbody and how to understand it and create change
  • The role we play as co-author in every relationship
  • How illness and wellness are culturally defined
  • Adopting a middle-way consciousness with the definition of illness and wellness
  • How the immune system has morals and an ethical system that it assimilates from your culture
  • How thoughts and emotions affect the nervous, immune, and endocrine system
  • Finding enjoyment in all conditions between adversity and good fortune
  • The difference between need and love

My guest today was tested in the way no parent every wants to be or thinks they will.

Mo Gawdat is the Chief Business Officer at Google’s [X]. At Google, his team is responsible for exploring “moonshot” dreams like the much-lauded self-driving car and providing global internet access by using sub-orbital balloons. For being at the top of a "dream team" though, Mo realized in 2001 that he was miserably unhappy and spirits were far from sailing above the clouds. So he did the one thing he knew how to do better than anything: he put his engineering experience to work and, by using data and research, he created an algorithm and “solved” happiness.

Thirteen years later, Mo’s algorithm would be put to the ultimate test. After the sudden, senseless death of his son Ali, Mo and his family turned to his equation which saved them from depths of despair. With a new sense of purpose and a drive to honor his son's memory, he began the #10MillionHappy Mission designed to make at least that many people realize that happiness is within their control.

Today we'll dive into the framework behind Solve for Happy and so much more.
We dive into topics like

  • Mo's "modern day warrior" journey that led him to Solve for Happy
  • The 6 Grand Illusions, the 7 Blind Spots, and the 5 Ultimate Truths

  • How happiness is truly the absence of unhappiness

  • It's not the events of life that make you unhappy, it's the way you think about the events of life that make you unhappy

I’m constantly on the lookout for new and interesting approaches to health and healing. This medicine is much more traditional, and is starting to make it's way into the western world. I'm yet to personally experiment with Kambo medicine, and I invited Simon Scott on the show today to chat about this peculiar frog venom.

Simon Scott grew up in England and studied Computer Science to Masters level. He moved to Asia in his mid-twenties to work in Post Production and was there for 5 years, Thailand, Singapore, and Hong Kong. After being headhunted to the States to work in a Hollywood design company he won an Emmy for his work and used that as a catalyst to become an American citizen. After a decade of working for leading Hollywood film post-production companies Simon started Mac Guff, and boutique post-production company in Santa Monica CA. For five years Simon and his team produced many award winning TV Commercials for leading brands such as Hummer, Acura, DeBeers and Panasonic. It was during this time that Simon became stressed, overworked and had a hard time dealing with the riggers of running his company.

After much soul-seeking, he decided to leave his career to find something more personally rewarding, something closer to his heart. Simon sought out answers in South America, in Colombia where he worked with Kambo Medicine and also drank the medicinal brew Ayahuasca over 50 times. It was during this period that he realized his deep desires to facilitate healing for others. As this desire grew stronger, people showed up for healing and Simon steadily grew a solid reputation as a practitioner of Kambo. Simon has worked with Kambo now for 7 years and has been proving the Kambo medicine to others for over 5 years.

He has worked with 1000’s of people from all over the world and has a perfect safety record with the Kambo medicine. Simon is the creator of the website KamboCleanse.com, which is an authority on the Kambo medicine and which helps people to research Kambo before deciding to work with it. Simon currently lives in Sedona Arizona where he facilitates Kambo ceremonies.

We dive into topics like

    ⁃    Simon's journey to discover
⁃    Kambo medicineistening to your soul's calling
⁃    The power of more traditional plant medicines to open the heart
