In a society where we place a high value on the intellect, it can be a tough to drop into how we really feel about making choices in our life.

I've personally found it extremely valuable to be able to tap into a deeper intelligence to navigate life's choices and be able to draw upon the feeling of a decision.

In a recent coaching session with a client we came up with a great analogy that helped her clear the mental clutter and drop into a deeper more resourceful place to make the choice she was up against.

In today's episode I'll unpack what that looks like and how to move from a more frenetic whack-a-mole state to a place of yummy tummy. I know that sounds a little strange, but you'll hear all about it in today's show.

Something that a lot of us men are missing out on is real authentic connection with other men. Like a lot of things that somehow find their way into my life, I didn't know it was something I needed until it found me.

My friend Billy introduced me to the work of Dr. Robert Glover and his book, No More Mr. Nice Guy. After diving into his work and having him on the show, I started attending a men's group with my friend Billy and about 8-10 other guys every other week.

One of the exercises we've done in the group is sharing a story, something we did, or something that happened to us that we haven't shared, or that we are ashamed of. I really underestimated the power of such a simple exercise.

In today's episode, I'll unpack what I'm starting to understand about shame and some things that are unfolding as a result of entering the darkness to find the light.

Growing up an Irish boy in East London, Steve Sims was the son of a brick mason. This laid the foundation, yes... pun intended..., for his insane work ethic. Even after achieving financial success he felt something deeper calling. Using what he learned in that external journey, Nate applied his lessons of higher accountability and responsibility to developing communities and sharing his gifts with those around him.

Nate Lind, the youngest of six kids, is an entrepreneur, explorer and investor. He is the founder of Legendary Man an 8-figure e-commerce company, and one of the most popular men’s grooming and lifestyle brands in the world.

His first taste of financial success came in his early twenties when he became proficient in the art of buying and flipping houses. There are countless ways to manage overwhelm, and I've found these three things consistently over time put everything else in place.

When I got very clear on how I wanted to feel and acting and creating from that place, things got a lot more fulfilling.

Now, please hear me on this one. I'm definitely not saying I've got this perfect, that's why it's called a practice :) BUT when I can continually nudge myself in the direction of cultivating a heightened emotional state and bringing awareness to how I actually feel, shit gets a lot easier.

My guest today helps men to overcome something he calls the "nice guy syndrome." I was pretty shocked after digging into this work how many characteristics I've seen in my own relationships.

They can help you stay accountable, increase gains, and record way more data than we can manually. BUT have we switched out the reward of happy hormones and flow for better metrics?

My guest today, through decades of research, her lab work, and peer reviewed publications, has presented a new theory of emotion in her most recent book How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain.

Lisa Feldman Barrett, PhD, is a University Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University, with appointments at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. In addition to the book How Emotions are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain, Dr. Barrett has published over 200 peer-reviewed, scientific papers appearing in Science, Nature Neuroscience, and other top journals in psychology and cognitive neuroscience, as well as six academic volumes published by Guilford Press.

Dr. Barrett received a National Institutes of Health Director’s Pioneer Award for her revolutionary research on emotion in the brain. These highly competitive, multimillion dollar awards are given to scientists of exceptional creativity who are expected to transform biomedical and behavioral research.

Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Barrett has testified before Congress, presented her research to the FBI, consulted to the National Cancer Institute, appeared on Through The Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, and been a featured guest on public television and worldwide radio programs. She is also an elected fellow of Canada’s most prestigious national organization of scholars, the Royal Society of Canada (analogous to the National Academy in the United States).

Could there be a potential down side to positive thinking? If you've tuned into the show before, you've heard me have many conversations with leaders and authors on the benefits of positive thinking, imagination, and other methods characteristic of the self-help and positive psychology movement.

On some level I think we know that pushing away or even suppressing seemingly negative emotions is counterproductive. All the while we get mixed messages, from social media etc., that always staying positive is the way to be.
